There is a place in Kenya where the earth seems to touch the heavens. In the shadow of the highest mountain in Africa lies a sanctuary of swamps and dusty plains. This is Amboseli National Park. It is a land where ancient wisdom is carried by massive creatures with ivory tusks. If you desire to see the true majesty of the African elephant this is your ultimate destination.
Amoseli is famous for being the best place in the world to get close to free ranging elephants. Unlike many other parks the landscape here is open and flat. This makes wildlife viewing incredibly easy and rewarding. You do not have to search for hours to find the herds. Instead they often present themselves in spectacular fashion against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The Crown of Africa: Mount Kilimanjaro
Although the mountain itself is located across the border in Tanzania the very best views are found right here in Kenya. Mount Kilimanjaro rises over five thousand meters above the plains. On a clear morning the snow capped peaks create a breathtaking contrast with the golden savannah below. It is a sight that has inspired poets and photographers for generations.
To see the mountain at its clearest you must wake up before the sun rises. As the first light of day touches the peak it turns a soft shade of pink and orange. This is the moment when the elephants begin their daily march toward the swamps. It is the perfect opportunity for photography enthusiasts to capture the shot of a lifetime.
The Elephant Trust of Amboseli
The elephants of Amboseli are some of the most studied animals on the planet. Because of decades of conservation work and research these herds are remarkably calm in the presence of vehicles. You will often find yourself just a few meters away from a peaceful grandmother elephant leading her family to water. It is a deeply moving experience to look into the eyes of such a large and intelligent being.
These giants spend much of their day in the Enkongo Narok swamp. This lush green oasis is fed by the melting snows of Kilimanjaro. It provides a constant source of water even during the driest seasons. Watching elephants play in the mud or graze on the thick swamp grass is a highlight of any visit to the park.
Other Wildlife Wonders in the Park
While the elephants and the mountain are the main attractions there is much more to discover. The park is home to a rich variety of bird life with over four hundred species recorded. You can spot bright pink flamingos in the seasonal lakes and majestic fish eagles soaring above the wetlands.
You will also encounter large numbers of buffaloes hippos giraffes and zebras. Predators like lions and cheetahs are present but they can be more elusive than in the Masai Mara. However seeing a lion resting in the tall grass near the swamp is an unforgettable sight that adds to the magic of the ecosystem.
The Best Time to Experience Amboseli
We recommend visiting during the dry seasons which occur from June to October and again from January to February. During these months the animals gather in large numbers around the permanent swamps. The vegetation is also thinner which makes it much easier to spot wildlife from a distance.
If you prefer bird watching then the rainy season from November to May is wonderful. The park becomes incredibly green and lush and many migratory birds arrive during this time. No matter when you choose to come the park always has a unique beauty to share with its visitors.
