An expertly crafted 7 day safari that pairs the remote drama of Samburu National Reserve in Kenya's arid north with the timeless wildlife spectacle of the Masai Mara in the south. Together, these two reserves represent the full sweep of Kenya's wildlife heritage, and the contrast between them is extraordinary. In Samburu, three days in the thornbush beside the Ewaso Ng'iro River reveal the Northern Five, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk, species that exist nowhere else in Kenya. Lion and leopard are reliably sighted near the river, and Samburu's smaller, wilder camps offer a genuine wilderness feel. After a scenic drive south, the Masai Mara opens before you like a stage set for Africa. Three days of game drives including dawn and dusk outings reveal cheetah mothers with cubs, lion coalitions, enormous breeding herds of buffalo and the full drama of predator and prey on Africa's most famous savannah. This is mid range safari at its most rewarding.
7 days of carefully planned experiences.
Drive north through Mount Kenya's forest corridor, crossing the semi-arid Laikipia Plateau into the arid north. Samburu's doum palms and Ewaso Ng'iro River appear in the afternoon. First drive reveals reticulated giraffe and Grevy's zebra immediately.
A complete day dedicated to finding all five of Samburu's unique northern species. Expert guides know individual leopards by name and track them daily along the river. Crocodiles measuring over 4 metres bask on sandbanks, and enormous elephant bulls with sweeping tusks cross the river in slow procession.
Morning game drive before sunrise finds lions on a buffalo kill near the river. A unique night game drive in the adjacent private conservancy reveals serval, African wildcat, lesser bushbaby, porcupine and the extraordinary sight of an aardvark digging for termites in a rain-softened clearing.
The long scenic drive south covers over 400 km through Kenya's diverse landscapes. The Laikipia plateau, Rift Valley escarpment, and finally the golden grassland of the Mara. Arriving at dusk for a sunset welcome drink at your tented camp.
A complete Mara day with three game drives: pre-dawn, mid-morning and late afternoon. The morning drive is the most productive for predator action. The afternoon delivers the famous Mara light — warm, golden and flattering to every wildlife photograph.
Focus on the Mara and Talek Rivers for wildebeest crossing activity (July–October). In other months, the river corridors deliver leopard, hippo, crocodile and extraordinary birdlife. Evening campfire dinner at your tented camp under canvas.
Final dawn drive then breakfast before the drive northeast to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon.
