Your Day-by-Day Itinerary

5 days of carefully planned experiences.

1

Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

Arrival and Pickup Masai Mara National Reserve Sarova Mara Game Camp (luxury tented camp inside Masai Mara NR)

Your expert driver-guide meets you at Nairobi airport or hotel for an early morning departure heading southwest through the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The road descends dramatically through Narok town and into the vast open savannah of the Mara ecosystem. Your first views of wildebeest, zebra and giraffe appear long before you reach the reserve gate. After checking in and enjoying lunch at your luxury tented camp, an afternoon game drive begins in earnest — the Mara's famous resident lion prides are often seen near the main river in the late afternoon, and cheetah mothers are frequently spotted on the open plains. Return to camp for sundowners and dinner under an African sky blazing with stars.

2

Full Day Masai Mara Game Drives

Masai Mara National Reserve Sarova Mara Game Camp (luxury tented camp inside Masai Mara NR)

A full day dedicated to exploring the finest game-viewing reserve in Africa. An early 06:00 game drive sets out before sunrise to catch predators active at dawn — lion cubs playing near dens, cheetah mothers leading their young on early hunts, and hyena clans returning from a night's scavenging. The Mara River crossing points become theatre in July–October when wildebeest gather in nervous thousands before plunging into the crocodile-filled current in a spectacle of chaos and survival. A packed bush lunch is served in the field before an afternoon drive continues until the golden light of sunset silhouettes acacia trees against a rose-pink sky. The Mara's famously high predator density almost guarantees daily leopard sightings in the riverine thickets. Almost 500 bird species have been recorded, including 16 eagle species and the Kori bustard — the world's heaviest flying bird.

3

Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park

Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge (luxury lodge inside Lake Nakuru NP)

After an early morning game drive and breakfast, you depart the Mara northward, crossing the equator en route to Lake Nakuru National Park — one of Kenya's most photographed and beloved wildlife destinations. The drive takes approximately 4 hours with a lunch stop at a roadside lodge. Lake Nakuru sits in a shallow alkaline basin surrounded by acacia woodland and dramatic yellow-barked fever tree forest. The lake is world-famous for its flamingo population — at peak times up to two million lesser and greater flamingos create a deep pink band around its shores that can be seen from space. Nakuru is also a rhino sanctuary: over 60 white rhinos and around 40 black rhinos roam freely, making this one of Africa's best places to reliably see both species in the same outing. An afternoon game drive reveals giraffes moving through yellow fever trees, enormous pythons draped across branches, leopards resting in the canopy, and a profusion of waterbirds including pelicans, cormorants and African spoonbills.

4

Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha

Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort (mid-range hotel near Lake Naivasha)

Begin the day with an early morning game drive around Lake Nakuru, heading to Baboon Cliff viewpoint at sunrise for a breathtaking panoramic view over the lake — the pink shimmer of flamingos contrasting with the blue water and surrounding green hills is one of Kenya's great sights. After breakfast, the lion-frequented forest trails offer one more chance for a sighting before you depart for Lake Naivasha. The highest of the Rift Valley lakes at 1,884 metres elevation, Naivasha is surrounded by lush riparian forest and the famous yellow fever acacia woodland. After lunch at your lodge, an afternoon boat safari takes you gently along the shoreline past wallowing hippos (over 4,000 estimated in the lake) — enormous animals that seem indifferent to your presence from the water. Kingfishers, African fish eagles, African jacana, cormorants and herons provide extraordinary close-up birding. The evening around the lake brings dramatic orange sunsets reflected in the still water.

5

Hell's Gate & Return to Nairobi

Departure

Your final safari morning begins early with a visit to Hell's Gate National Park — one of Kenya's most unique wildlife experiences, where you can walk and cycle among zebra, giraffe, gazelle, eland and warthog without a vehicle between you and the animals. The park's dramatic landscape of basalt cliffs, geothermal steam vents, a deep gorge carved by ancient volcanic activity, and Fischer's Tower rock column provide breathtaking scenery. Verreaux's eagles nest on the cliff faces and augur buzzards soar overhead. A final packed lunch is enjoyed in the park before your return drive to Nairobi, arriving mid-afternoon to allow time for city connections or onward travel. Your driver-guide can arrange a drop-off at the airport or your preferred Nairobi hotel.
